Though it is no longer either a military or civilian spaceport, Woomera Range Complex has a long Cold War history surrounding it. As a spaceport, it was the site of many British military and civilian launches, including the launch of the Prospero satellite.
The restricted area that is the Woomera Range Complex was originally organized in 1946 as part of a collaboration with the United Kingdom to test captured V-1 and V-2 (A-4) weapons. The 1950s and 1960s would see British military and civilian launcher testing, in collaboration with the Australian government. The civilian program ultimately culminated in the launch of a satellite into orbit from the range on a Black Arrow launcher. In addition to launch activities, Woomera was the site of communications equipment for the United States space program until the site was no longer needed.
