Additional Background

Formed in 2003 from the merger of three government agencies, JAXA has carried on earlier focuses from a precursor agency in astronomy, as well as manage JAXA's contribution to re-supply of the International Space Station. Uncrewed missions for Earth observation and to other planets and Luna are planned - adding to existing succesful missions such as a lunar orbiter.

The agency currently operates several satellites in Earth orbit, as well as an experiments module on the International Space Station.
